As the thin light of a mid fall sunrise spills over the West End of Vancouver a large bank of bay fog, more an overnight visitor to be honest, begins its retreat. As the mist slinks into English Bay you can hear it grumble "I'll be bach.".
Treating this as a challenge you decide to listen to a random shuffle play of all six of The Brandenburg Concertos by J.S. Bach. 18 movements in all. Very renegade.

Vancouver as seen from the main Cypress Mountain observation point on a cool and semi-foggy November Thursday.
Foreground, freakin' pair of pine trees, next West Van, then the north end of the Lion's Gate Bridge, after that the eastern edge of Stanley Park, then downtown Vancouver, Burnaby, New West, Surrey and, breath, Washington State. Yes we can see Mt. Baker from here on a clear day (it looks awesome) but no we can't see Alaska let along Russia. This shot is facing south east.

Here's my sister and I checking out train and ship models in what was then Heidelberg West Germany circa 1964. Just shy of 2 decades past the end of the second world war.
Being a geek even at that young age I was gobsmacked over how cool and awesome the models were. My sister? ... Based on body language I'm thinkin ... not so much. :)
Odette Goes to War - 1944
One of the more fascinating women I've met and developed a deep friendship with over the years is Odette. That's her on the far right in this photo. Odette, who today is just shy of 90, joined the Canadian military in the darkest days of the second world war as part of the military's entertainment group. Her and her troupe would roam from allied front-line base to to front-line base in war torn Europe and entertain the troops. Needless to say her stories of that time are nothing short of astounding.
In this shot a 19 year old Odette, along with 5 of her fellow entertainers prepare to board their troop ship to England. An interesting voyage she says as they ran dark at night for the week it took to avoid the German U-boats.

Seawall Leaf Oct 31 2012 01a
A nice amount of rain in Vancouver today. Perfect for power walking in that (a) I wear rain gear so walking in the rain is like being a kid again, (b) the cooler temperature and moisture makes it easier to regulate my body temperature while walking and (c) for 50% of the walk the seawall is all mine.
Here's a leaf among many but one alone and bright enough to catch my eye. Proof yet again that the best camera (iPhone 4 in this case) is the one you have with you.

Combine a full moon and a high tide and you wind up with English Bay Vancouver being transformed into a mirror. Here the mirror perfectly reflects a blue-sky break between the grey fall rains.
I was watching the devastating photos coming out of New York City during Hurricane Sandy while taking this shot. So sad that the same tidal surge that gave English Bay its glassiness delivered such a painful moment to such a wonderful and beautiful city. My heart truly weeps.

English Bay Vancouver caught in a moment of atmospheric clarity at sunrise on October 22 2012.
This view looks north west from downtown Vancouver with the hills of West Vancouver in the foreground and the peak of Bowen Island after that and then the range of peaks that make up the Tetrahedron Provincial Park in the far background. On the far right is Tetrahedron Peak itself. At 1,739m (5,705 feet) in height the peak presents both an impressive vista as well as a tempting and challenging climb to the more physically fit denizens of British Columbia's lower mainland.
The clarity of this shot still amazes me. We get these sorts of bubbles of atmospheric clarify every once and awhile.

Vancouver's Burrard Street Bridge :: built between 1930 and 1932 as one of Canada's great depression shovel-ready construction projects.
Gotta love depressions. We get such cool stuff. For the 2008 one we in Vancouver wound up, among other goodies, with a new western Stanley Park Seawall. Very cool.
I love this bridge and from day one thought of it as sturdy but still quite pretty. Sort of like how I, as a Welsh Canadian, view Northern European women In a bridge sort of way I mean. ;)
And, over the years, I've come to realize that half of my infatuation with the bridge is its reflection in the waters of False Creek. In this shot the water is looking all 'Bond, James Bond' slate-metal-cool. Makes the bridge, naturally due to the 'Bond-Factor', look even cooler. :)

OK, I'll admit it. I love the rule of thirds. As a photographer it's like my security blanket. In particular when it includes vertical elements like these first growth elms. These are the 20 year old+ survivors of eastern Ontario's heavy winters. Brrrr.

I love my Nikon D300 - just under a thousand frames till we hit 40,000 shots. Not quite zero problems but close enough.
I also love the king tree in this shot. Think about it. For a tree it's all about getting sunshine. The higher you are the higher the chances of getting sunshine versus your shorter brothers and sisters. If I came back as a tree I'd want to be that tree. No question.

Last evening the lower mainland BC and most of Vancouver Island experienced the first wind storm of the coming winter season. On a Category 1 to 5 scale - with the storm of December 2001 (I lost a window in my apartment) and the typhoon class storm of December 2006 (it leveled 41 hectares of Stanley Park) both category 5 storms - this most recent storm, more a warm-up really, I'd rate a 1. Low on the scale but still able to find one less than perfectly moored sailboat and deliver it to Sunset Beach in Vancouver's West End.
Gilligan's got some explaining to do.
