2013 12 Dec 28 Gulf Island Sunset 01a
And yes ... I did compose this shot mostly with the aspect ratio of my Facebook cover photo in mind. 851 pixels wide and 315 pixels tall.
Makes me feel ... dirty ... but in a good way.
Weird.

My favorite of this series. Mid right is the murder of crows heading SE to Burnaby. Classic Vancouver fall day. Magic light more often than not. This time thanks to the eye of an arctic outflow.
Clear skies = cold nights.
Cloudy skies = wet nights.
West coast fall and winter.

The English Bay sailboats regroup to consider their next move against the cargo tankers.
With the arrival of the fourth tanker things had ... changed. And not for the better.

Beach Avenue in Vancouver's West End on our first real snow day.
A dump of nearly 1 cm of snow with overnight temperatures dipping down to near -5'c. Gasp.
Meanwhile, thanks to satellite data, we've discovered that the temperature in Antarctica can dip to -92'c.
Which raises a few big questions. Chief among them being at -92'c how many seconds would it take for a double tall peppermint mocha to freeze solid? Faster than a macchiato?

While November 27 2013 was a mostly cloudy day in Vancouver the city was treated to a brief blast of sunshine right at sunset. Here's a mellow fall sunset over the gulf islands in the Strait of Georgia west of Vancouver.

Vancouver Canada's Sunset Beach on a particularily blustery (40 km/hr winds) day. Just right of dead center is the Burrard Street bridge which (so sad :( ) frames one of two beached sailboats I saw while walking the Seawall today.

Vancouver's West End.
Excluding the expensive bits.
In the back-back-background are the North Shore mountains, Cypress Mt. in this case and Vancouver's residential North Shore and West Van. suburbs.
Back-background is the Lion's Gate Bridge (mid far right). A photographer magnet. ... Like moths to a flame.
Background is Stanley Park. Just over a thousand acres (400 hectares) of second growth (100+ years) forest. Fresh pine scent at no additional charge.
Foreground is the West End of Vancouver.

Granville Island Market settles into the evening.
Cool slow mo rev 01 - CSM01
White Balance at 2400'K, 5 +/- 1 f/stop sequence, HDR composited then warmed during post processing. Sort of like double casking scotch.
Nice.

Vancouver's H.R. MacMillan Space Center just past sunset on Sunday November 10 2013.
This is a new digital photography technique that I'm trying out. First I super cool the white balance on my camera down to 2500K. This is as low as my Nikon D300 will go and filters out much of the zombie-orange color cast that modern street lights create. I then take 5 exposures (on a tripod) from 1.3 seconds to 20 seconds in length (at f/6.3 in this case). I then merge these 5 images into one high dynamic range image and post process that image in yet in another program.
A lot of work but the results are worth it. Imaging having a pair of night vision goggles that could give you a color image like this?

My first TV series photo-bomb.
In the back is camera and sound.
Next are our three actors.
Then comes the requisite Vancouver PD cruiser, lights on, cop A 'chatting' with cop B.
Next is the scene's curious but distant 'person walking by in the background' walking by in my foreground.
Then there's me taking the picture.
My guess is the series being shot is the ever excellent sci-fi show 'Continuum'. Many movies and TV shows are shot in Vancouver but 'Continuum' is one of the few that includes Vancouver clearly in its plot. Worth a watch if you're into sci-fi with a time travel twist. Two thumbs up.
